Your Emirates ID shows an expiry date that is getting close, or has already passed. The questions are practical: when can you renew, what does ICP charge, and when does a fine start?
ICP's service card says a resident can renew when "less than six months remains before its expiry for non-UAE nationals", or after it has expired. ICP's FAQ, read in a browser on 20 September 2026, states: "A grace period of 30 days from the card's expiration date is granted to complete the renewal procedures." After that, ICP lists a fine of AED 20 for each day of delay, capped at AED 1,000. For residents, the ID renewal runs alongside the residence renewal, with a Dubai exception covered below.
For the residence permits the ID sits on, start with the overview of UAE residence visa types. This article covers the Emirates ID itself: timing, fees, fines, channels and a renewal calendar, for residents and HR teams.
The short answer: window, grace period and fine
All three ICP statements below were read in a browser on 20 September 2026.
- When you can renew. ICP's FAQ states: "GCC nationals and residents may renew their Emirates ID card upon its expiry or during the final six months of its validity."
- The grace period. The same FAQ states: "A grace period of 30 days from the card's expiration date is granted to complete the renewal procedures. Upon the expiry of this grace period, the prescribed late renewal fee shall apply."
- The fine. ICP's FAQ answers "What is the penalty for late renewal?" with: "A fine of AED 20 is imposed for each day of delay, up to a maximum of AED 1,000. The fine starts after 30 days from the ID card's expiration date."
u.ae's Emirates ID page words it differently: "If it is renewed after one month since expiry, a late fee of AED 20 per day will be charged". ICP, the issuing authority, says 30 days, and this article follows ICP. Put the date in your own calendar rather than waiting for a reminder.
Two different grace periods: the ID and the residence
The 30-day grace period above belongs to the Emirates ID. Residence permits carry their own grace periods, set by category and by the issuing authority.
ICP's "Cancellation of residency permits" service card, read in a browser on 20 September 2026, lists these residence grace periods:
| Residence category (ICP wording, shortened) | Residence grace period on ICP's card |
|---|---|
| Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members, widows or divorced women of residents, students after completing their studies, foreign-passport holders who are relatives of UAE citizens | "A 180-day grace period" |
| "skilled workers in levels 1-3 and property owners" | "A 90-day grace period" |
| "residence permits issued with a guarantor or host" | "A 60-day grace period" |
| "all other categories" | "A 30-day grace period" |
GDRFA Dubai gives a different figure on its own cards. Its "Issuing residence permits for the private sector" card, read in a browser on 20 September 2026, states: "The grace period to stay inside the country after the expiration of the residence permit or its cancellation is (60) days."
The two authorities publish different residence grace periods for the general category. We have not resolved this. Ask the authority that issued your residence permit which period applies to you.
The overstay fine is also a residence rule. ICP's "Renewal of residency permits" card states: "A fine of AED 50 per day is applied for remaining inside the UAE starting from the day following the end of the grace period". That is separate from the AED 20 daily ID fine. Treat the ID date and the residence date as separate dates in your calendar.
ICP's FAQ describes the Green Residency as including "a flexible grace period of up to 6 months after the permit expires." That, again, is a residence grace period; see the guide to the UAE Green Visa.
How the ID renewal connects to your residence renewal
Residents renew the ID and the residence together in all emirates except Dubai, according to ICP. ICP's Identity Card Renewal card, with the category set to "Resident", states: "The application for renewing the Identity Card is submitted in conjunction with the residence application through the unified residence and identity form, in all emirates of the country except the Emirate of Dubai".
ICP's "Renewal of residency permits" card describes that service as enabling "the renewal of a new residence permit linked to an Emirates ID card application." ICP announced the unified form in April 2022, when it stated: "The residence and the identity card applications will be joined together in a new unified form that includes the issuance and renewal of the residence and identity card services in one application."
On expiry, u.ae's page on general provisions for the residence visa states: "Remember that when the visa expires, your Emirates ID card issued by the ICP also expires." It adds: "Your sponsor must renew your residence visa before it expires." Read both expiry dates from your own documents and track each one.
If your residence is in Dubai
ICP's unified form line excludes Dubai, so follow GDRFA Dubai's residence renewal service card for your category. GDRFA Dubai's "Renewing a residence permit for the private sector" card, as read on 20 September 2026, did not mention the Emirates ID.
Before you file a Dubai residence renewal, ask GDRFA Dubai or ICP how the ID renewal is lodged with it. Dubai transactions handled through GDRFA Dubai's service centres are covered in the guide to Amer centres and Dubai transactions.
Fees ICP lists for a resident's ID renewal
ICP's Identity Card Renewal card, read in a browser on 20 September 2026 with the category set to "Resident", lists two fee lines:
- "Renewal fees for the Identity Card of residents, for each year of residence - 100 AED"
- "Smart Application Fees - 100 AED"
The first line is charged "for each year of residence". Read both lines on the card on the day you apply.
ICP's card also lists "Urgent service fee (available only at the Authority's service centers) - 150 AED", but in the browser reading that line appeared under the UAE Citizen category, not in the Resident fee list. Ask ICP whether an urgent option applies to your category.
Keep three kinds of cost apart:
- Government charges. The ICP fee lines above, plus the residence renewal fees on the card for your emirate. ICP and GDRFA Dubai structure these differently; read your own card rather than comparing them.
- Third-party costs. Any medical examination, photographs or delivery charge in your case.
- Provider service fees. A typing centre or provider may charge its own fee; ask for it as a separate line.
Fees checked on 20 September 2026.
Fines ICP lists on the renewal card
| Fine (ICP wording) | Amount on the card | Note |
|---|---|---|
| "Expiration of the permitted period for renewing the identity card in cases where renewal is allowed, with a fine imposed for each day of delay, not exceeding 1,000 dirhams." | 20 AED | ICP's FAQ says the fine starts after 30 days from expiry |
| Late reporting of a change in personal or civil data: "within 30 days from the date the change occurred, with a fine imposed for each day of delay, not exceeding 1,000 dirhams" | 20 AED | A different rule: 30 days from a change in your data, not from expiry |
The second fine's 30 days run from a change in your "prescribed personal or civil data", as ICP's card puts it; ask ICP which changes this covers. Do not read it as the expiry grace period.
Federal Law No. (9) of 2006 Concerning Residential Register and the Identity Card is shown as "Active" on the UAE Legislation portal. Its Article 16 states that the Cabinet shall "issue a resolution specifying the fines that the Authority shall impose on any person who violates any of the provisions of Articles 6 and 10 of this Law, amounting to no more than AED 1,000." The text we read may predate its two listed amendments.
If you were outside the UAE when the card expired
ICP runs a "Request for Exemption from Delay Fees" service. Its card describes it as "A service through which an exemption from administrative delay fees associated with the ID card is requested, according to the approved exemption decisions." It states: "The application is submitted in conjunction with the ID card request."
The cases returned from that card relate to an ID that expired after deportation or while a passport was held in a court case, legal cases affecting a passport reservation, and delays linked to obtaining nationality and family data. We did not find a case for residents who were outside the UAE on that card, the renewal card, ICP's FAQ or u.ae's Emirates ID page, reviewed on 20 September 2026. If you believe an exemption applies, read the card's conditions and ask ICP before you pay.
How to renew: channels and steps
Channels. ICP's renewal card lists its customer happiness centres by name, the "ICP Smart Services Website" and the "ICP Smart App". u.ae's Emirates ID page adds: "The Emirates ID is renewed by ICP, through customer happiness centres or the smart services system (website and the UAEICP application on Apple and Google platforms)."
Login. ICP's card states: "This service requires you to login using UAE Pass". For company users setting up access, see the guide to UAE Pass for business.
What you prepare. For residents, the card lists "Passport" and "Personal Photo". It adds: "A recent personal photograph must be provided when submitting the application and must not be identical to the current photograph printed on the Emirates ID card."
Medical fitness. Under the Resident category, the card states: "Completing the service requires obtaining the necessary approvals and passing the medical examination with a 'fit' result".
Fingerprints and signature. The card states: "Individuals who have completed 15 years of age are required to complete the fingerprint and signature procedures through the Authority's service centers". u.ae phrases it as: "You might need to visit one of ICP's service centres to provide your biometric details." We did not find an age-based exemption from this step on ICP's Identity Card Renewal card or u.ae's Emirates ID page, reviewed on 20 September 2026.
Finishing the file. The card warns: "The application will be canceled if the procedures are not completed or if the required modifications to the returned applications for amendment are not made within the specified period".
Delivery. ICP's card states: "The new Identity Card is delivered through the authorized courier for the standard service, and collected from the Authority's centers for the urgent service." Keep your phone number and address current before you apply.
Tracking. ICP's "ID Card Status" page states: "To check the status of your ID Card Application, enter your Application Number (PRAN) or your Emirates ID Number". It lists 600522222 as a number inside the UAE.
Lost or damaged card before renewal
A lost or damaged card is a replacement, not a renewal. ICP's replacement service card describes "the issuance of a new Identity Card as a replacement for a lost or damaged card, with the new card issued for the same validity period as the original card."
Its fee lines include "Fees for issuing a replacement ID card (lost/damaged) - 300 AED" and "Smart Service Fees - 100 AED". The server-side reading showed no category heading above these lines, so confirm the fee for your category on the card. ICP's FAQ lists the channels: "the smart application, the official website, authorized typing centers, or customer happiness centers."
A replacement keeps the old expiry date, so if the card is close to expiry, ask ICP whether a replacement or a renewal suits your case.
A short note for UAE nationals
ICP's FAQ states that UAE nationals may renew "during the final year of its validity". The renewal card lists "Fee for renewing a five-year Emirates ID card for UAE nationals under the age of 21 - 100 AED" and "Fee for renewing a ten-year Emirates ID card for UAE nationals aged 21 and above - 200 AED".
For HR teams: tracking staff ID dates
Federal Law No. (9) of 2006, Article 10, states: "No employee, user, worker, student or whoever person may be accepted, used or retained unless he/she has the card." That is the law's wording; ask a licensed legal adviser what it means for your workforce.
For the Resident category, ICP's Identity Card Renewal card lists only "Passport" and "Personal Photo" as documents; we did not find a line on that card or on ICP's FAQ, reviewed on 20 September 2026, tying a resident's Emirates ID renewal to the employer's trade licence or establishment card. The one link line we found is on ICP's "Renewal of Establishment Card" card: "The service is granted only if a valid trade license is available".
Use the company dates as prompts, not as rules about the ID:
- The establishment card and the company's immigration file are covered in the guide to the establishment card and the company immigration file.
- The trade licence cycle is covered in the guide to trade licence renewal in Dubai.
- Hiring steps for a new employee are covered in the employer's step-by-step employment visa process.
Keep one row per employee, with separate columns for residence expiry, ID expiry, submission date and PRAN.
The renewal calendar

Practical asset: the Emirates ID renewal calendar for one resident and one company. Fill in the dates from your own documents. Each rule comes from the named page as read on 20 September 2026. | Line | Date to write in | Rule and source | |---|---|---| | 1. Residence visa expiry | ____ | u.ae: "when the visa expires, your Emirates ID card issued by the ICP also expires." | | 2. Emirates ID expiry (from the card) | ____ | Read the card; do not assume it matches line 1 | | 3. ID renewal window opens | ____ | ICP: "less than six months remains before its expiry for non-UAE nationals" | | 4. Target submission date | ____ | Your own date, early in the window; ICP's card lists "5 Days" for completion | | 5. Fingerprint and signature visit (age 15 and over) | ____ | ICP: "through the Authority's service centers" | | 6. ID grace period ends | ____ | ICP FAQ: "30 days from the card's expiration date" | | 7. ID fine begins | ____ | ICP FAQ: "The fine starts after 30 days from the ID card's expiration date." AED 20 a day, up to AED 1,000 | | 8. Residence grace period ends (separate rule) | ____ | ICP: 30, 60, 90 or 180 days by category; GDRFA Dubai: "(60) days". Ask your issuing authority | | 9. Company trade licence expiry (prompt) | ____ | ICP establishment card: "granted only if a valid trade license is available" | | 10. Establishment card expiry (prompt) | ____ | Check the card; renew it with its issuing authority | Five checks before you submit 1. Is the ID expiry within the final six months, or already passed? [yes / no] 2. Is your residence in Dubai? If yes, follow GDRFA Dubai's residence renewal card and ask how the ID is lodged. 3. Do you have a UAE Pass login, a passport and a new photo that differs from the one on the card? 4. Is a medical examination with a "fit" result needed for your residence renewal? 5. Has any personal data changed? ICP's data change fine runs from 30 days after the change.
A worked example
Take a resident outside Dubai whose Emirates ID card shows an expiry of 15 March 2027. By ICP's six-month rule, the renewal window opens in mid September 2026. By ICP's FAQ, the ID grace period runs 30 days from 15 March 2027, and the AED 20 daily fine starts after that.
These dates are our own count of ICP's wording; ICP decides how the days are counted, so confirm them with ICP. The residence grace period is a separate date, on line 8 of the calendar.
For a Dubai resident, the residence side follows GDRFA Dubai's card, including its own grace period line.
Who decides, what you prepare, what a provider can do
What the authority decides. ICP decides Emirates ID renewals, replacements and delay fee exemptions. The authority that issues the residence permit decides the residence renewal; for Dubai, follow GDRFA Dubai's card. No provider decides either.
What the person or company prepares. The passport, a new personal photo, a UAE Pass login, the medical fitness result where required, and the fingerprint and signature visit from age 15. The sponsor or employer keeps the residence renewal and its own company documents on time.
What a provider can do. A provider, including a typing centre, can prepare the application, submit it through a channel ICP lists and track its status, within whatever its licence covers. It cannot change ICP's fee lines, waive a fine or shorten ICP's processing time.
Eligibility is determined by the relevant UAE authority. This article describes published requirements and is not immigration advice.

If your Emirates ID or residence renewal is coming up, contact RINJAZ to confirm availability, scope and quotation. RINJAZ is a privately licensed UAE service provider. It is not a government entity and does not act for any authority.
A provider's role, within whatever its licensed activity covers, is to prepare documents, submit them through the correct channel and track progress. ICP decides each Emirates ID application, and no provider can promise the outcome.
