Your residence in the UAE is tied to your employer. If the job ends, u.ae states that a company cancelling an employee's visa "must first approach" MOHRE, and GDRFA Dubai's private sector card then gives a grace period. You have heard that a Green visa lets you sponsor yourself, and you want to know whether that is true, who it is for and what changes.
The short answer, from the official pages: ICP describes Green Residence as a residence granted "for a period of five years, with the option of renewal", which "enables holders to live and work in the UAE without the need for a sponsor." u.ae lists three categories: "Skilled workers", "Freelancers and self-employed" and "Investors and business partners." Each category has its own published conditions, and the issuing authority decides each application.
For how Green residence sits beside the other residence routes, see the overview of UAE residence visa types. This article covers what the Green visa is, the conditions per category, how self-sponsorship changes your obligations compared with employer sponsorship, the published fees and channels, and the grace periods, which the official pages word differently.
What the Green visa is, in the authorities' words
Three official sources describe the same product in slightly different language.
- u.ae calls it "a renewable residence visa valid for 5 years" with "the privilege of not needing a sponsor" and "the ability to sponsor family members, including spouses and children".
- ICP's Green Residence Guide (page updated 12 September 2026) states: "Green Residence is one of the UAE's long-term residence categories."
- Cabinet Resolution No. (65) of 2022, Article 38(2), in the downloaded text: "The Green Residence Permit shall entitle its holder to reside without a The Guarantor/The Employer in the State for a period of (5) five years, renewable for a similar period or periods".
The same Article 38, in clause (1), sets the ordinary permit: "The Residence Permit shall grant its holder the right to reside in the State for a period of (2) two years". That is the first practical difference: five years against two. The UAE Legislation portal lists the resolution as "Active" with six amendments; the download may be the original text, so confirm current wording with ICP.
The validity wording also varies slightly. GDRFA Dubai's skilled worker card says "for five years", while its partner investor card says "for up to five years". Ask the issuing authority which term applies to your permit.
The three categories and their published conditions
The table sets the category conditions side by side, as ICP and GDRFA Dubai publish them. Read the quotation, not a summary, before you gather documents.
| Category | ICP Green Residence Guide | GDRFA Dubai service card |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled workers | "valid employment contract within the UAE"; "professional classification from levels 1 to 3"; "no less than a bachelor's degree"; "minimum monthly salary requirement of AED 15,000" | "first, second or third level of the occupations classification"; "Bachelor's degree or its equivalent"; "not be less than (15000) fifteen thousand Dirhams" |
| Freelancers and self-employed | "freelance work permit or a self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation"; "bachelor's degree, specialised diploma, or equivalent"; income "not be less than AED 360,000" over "the previous two years" | "bachelor's degree, specialized diploma, or its equivalent"; income "for two preceding years should not be less than (360,000)"; "freelance work permit" from MOHRE |
| Investors and business partners | "proof of investment or contribution to a business venture within the UAE"; "necessary licences and approvals from the relevant authorities" | Card describes an "investor or partner in a commercial project"; no capital amount on the cards reviewed |
Skilled workers: self-sponsored, but still employed
The published conditions for this category still include employment. ICP requires "a valid employment contract within the UAE", and Article 43(1) of the resolution asks the applicant "To obtain a Working Permit in the State under a valid employment agreement in the State". GDRFA Dubai's card then says skilled workers may "live in the country without needing a guarantor or employer for five years."
The level test refers to MOHRE's classification. ICP asks for "A professional classification from levels 1 to 3, in accordance with the approved occupational classification of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation." Ask MOHRE which skill level is assigned to your occupation rather than guessing from your job title. The MOHRE permit and labour card are covered in the guide to work permits and labour cards.
On salary, ICP and Article 43(4) of the resolution word the figure as AED 15,000. GDRFA Dubai's green visa card for skilled workers states: "The salary must be at least 15,000 thousand Dirhams or the equivalent in other currencies." That is GDRFA Dubai's own wording; its residence permit card reads "(15000) fifteen thousand Dirhams".
Freelancers and self-employed: the income question
GDRFA Dubai's self-employment card states that the permit is given "without needing a guarantor/employer or an employment contract", "Whether inside or outside the country". The sources differ on income. Article 45(3) of the resolution joins the AED 360,000 test to an alternative: "or prove his financial solvency throughout his stay in the State." ICP lists income and "proof of stable annual income or financial solvency" as separate bullets without a connector. GDRFA Dubai's card lists the income test only. Ask the authority handling your file which evidence it needs. Freelance permits themselves are covered in the freelance visa guide for Dubai.
Investors and business partners: one figure, one authority
ICP's Issuing Residency Permit card, with "Green Residence Investor" selected, states: "The investor's contribution to the company must not be less than AED 1,000,000 in cash or its equivalent in foreign currencies". That figure is ICP's. We did not find a capital amount on the GDRFA Dubai green partner investor cards reviewed on 20 September 2026, and Article 41(2) refers to "percentages to be determined by a resolution of the Chairman". Do not treat AED 1,000,000 as a Dubai rule; ask GDRFA Dubai. The investor route is covered in the guide to investor and partner visas.
Employer sponsorship against self-sponsorship: what changes
Under employer sponsorship, u.ae's work visa page states: "The employer must apply for the standard work visa." Under Green residence, u.ae describes a different arrangement: "The green visa is for skilled employees on self-sponsorship." The pages reviewed do not set out every duty that changes; ask ICP or GDRFA Dubai which steps you take yourself. The comparison below shows only what the pages reviewed say; blank areas are marked as not found.

Practical asset: the sponsorship obligations comparison and category self-check. Fill in the last column from your own papers and from the authority's answers. | Obligation | Employer-sponsored residence | Self-sponsored Green residence | Your note | |---|---|---|---| | Who applies | u.ae: "The employer must apply for the standard work visa." | GDRFA Dubai: skilled workers may live in the country "without needing a guarantor or employer" | Applicant named on my file: ____ | | Validity | Res. 65/2022 Art. 38(1): "(2) two years" | Art. 38(2): "(5) five years, renewable" | Expiry date: ____ | | Who cancels | u.ae: "Normally, only the sponsor can cancel your residence visa." The company "must first approach Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation" | Not found on the pages reviewed; ask ICP or GDRFA Dubai | Answer received: ____ | | Conditions to keep | GDRFA Dubai renews a private sector permit "under the same terms as when it was first issued" | ICP investor card: must "continue to meet all conditions" and "notify the issuing authority" if they are no longer met; GDRFA Dubai skilled worker and self-employment renewal cards repeat the level, degree, salary or income conditions | Conditions I must still meet: ____ | | Grace period | GDRFA Dubai private sector card: "(60) sixty days" | ICP cancellation card: "180-day"; GDRFA Dubai green cards: "(180) days"; see the grace period section | Period the authority confirmed: ____ | | Family | u.ae family page: sponsor salary "AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation" (general rule for employees' families) | u.ae and ICP: Green holders may "sponsor first-degree relatives"; no Green-specific salary rule found | Relatives I plan to sponsor: ____ | | Six months abroad | Not covered here; check u.ae's re-entry service | u.ae: Green holders "can enter the country directly at any time as long as their residency is valid" | Planned absence: ____ | | Renewal | GDRFA Dubai private sector renewal card | GDRFA Dubai green renewal cards for skilled workers, self-employment and partner investors | Renewal date: ____ | Category self-check: answer before you apply Skilled worker 1. Has MOHRE confirmed that my occupation is at level 1, 2 or 3? [yes / no / not sure] 2. Do I hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent? 3. Is my monthly salary at least AED 15,000 on my contract? 4. Do I hold "a valid employment contract within the UAE"? Freelancer or self-employed 5. Do I hold a MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit, or only a free zone permit? 6. Can I show income of at least AED 360,000 a year for the previous two years? 7. If not, has the authority confirmed whether solvency evidence is accepted instead? Investor or partner 8. Does my trade licence name me as investor or partner? 9. Which contribution figure did the issuing authority in my emirate confirm? 10. Do I understand that I must tell the issuing authority if a condition stops being met, as ICP's investor card states?
The table is a record of published wording, not an eligibility test. A "yes" to each question means only that the published conditions appear to line up; the authority still decides.
Grace periods: the official wordings
The official pages do not use one phrase for the grace period. Each wording is shown as published.
| Source | Wording |
|---|---|
| ICP, Cancellation of residency permits card | "A 180-day grace period is granted after the expiry or cancellation of the residence permit for Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders and their family members" |
| ICP, same card, next sentence | "A 90-day grace period is granted after the expiry or cancellation of the residence permit for skilled workers in levels 1-3 and property owners." |
| ICP FAQ, Green Visa answer | "a flexible grace period of up to 6 months after the permit expires." |
| u.ae, general provisions for the residence visa | "up to 6 months (according to resident category)" |
| GDRFA Dubai green cards (skilled worker, self-employment, partner investor) | "(180) days" |
The ICP guide itself speaks only of "specified grace periods". ICP's card gives 180 days for Green holders and 90 days for "skilled workers in levels 1-3" in consecutive sentences, and does not say how the two relate for a skilled worker who holds Green residence. Ask ICP, or GDRFA Dubai for a Dubai permit, which period applies to your permit before relying on either.
After the grace period, ICP's cancellation card states: "A fine of AED 50 per day is applied for remaining inside the UAE starting from the day following the end of the grace period".
For contrast, GDRFA Dubai's private sector residence card states: "The grace period to stay inside the country after the expiration of the residence permit or its cancellation is (60) days." ICP's card gives "60-day" for "residence permits issued with a guarantor or host."
Fees and channels, as published
Government charges below are quoted from each service card. They are not totals. Third-party costs, such as attestation, and any provider service fee are separate and are not listed here.
| Service card | Fee lines as shown |
|---|---|
| GDRFA Dubai, Issuing a green residence permit (High Skilled Worker) | "Residence permit fee: AED200"; "Knowledge Dirham: AED10"; "Innovation Dirham: AED10"; "Fee inside the country: AED500"; "Delivery: 20 Dirhams."; "The issuance fee increases by AED100 annually whenever the residency is over two years." |
| GDRFA Dubai, Issuing a green residence permit (self-employment) | "Residence permit fee: AED200"; "Knowledge Dirham: AED10"; "Innovation Dirham: AED10"; "Fee inside the country: AED500"; "Delivery: AED20" |
| GDRFA Dubai, Issuance of a green visa (high-level skilled worker) | "Work visa fee: AED200 In addition to the value-added tax (5%)."; for a person inside the country: "Knowledge Dirham: AED10 Innovation Dirham: AED10 Fee inside the country: AED500" |
| ICP, Issuing Residency Permit (Green Residence Investor) | "Application Fees - 100 AED"; "Green Residence issuance fee for a 5-year duration, per year - 100 AED"; "Smart Service Fees - 100 AED" |
The GDRFA Dubai green visa card adds: "The total amount of the visa may vary depending on the circumstances surrounding the sponsored person". GDRFA Dubai's cards list an expected time of "48.0 Hour(s)"; that is the authority's published figure, not a promise.
Fees checked on 20 September 2026.
Channels. GDRFA Dubai's green visa card for skilled workers lists "GDRFA Website: The service is available 24/7" and "AMER Centers: The service is available during the official working hours in each service center". Amer centres are explained in the guide to Amer centres in Dubai. ICP's Issuing Residency Permit card lists the "ICP Smart Services Website" and "ICP Smart App". Its category selector lists "Green Residence Investor" but no skilled worker or freelancer Green category, as read on 20 September 2026. Ask ICP which channel handles those categories outside Dubai.
Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi Residents Office describes an Abu Dhabi Green Visa "valid for five years" and states: "Submitting a nomination request for this category is currently unavailable through Abu Dhabi Residents Office." That was the position on 20 September 2026. The other emirates' own pages were not reviewed for this article.
Family: what Green holders may sponsor
Three sources agree on the core point. u.ae's family page states: "Holders of the Green visa are also entitled to sponsor first-degree relatives." ICP's Issuing Residency Permit card states: "Holders of the Green Residence are also entitled to sponsor first-degree relatives." Article 54(2) reads: "The Foreigner who has obtained a Green Residence Permit may bring in his first-degree relatives".
What we did not find matters as much. We did not find a Green-specific sponsor salary rule or family age limit on the u.ae Green visa page, the ICP guide or GDRFA Dubai's family residence card, reviewed on 20 September 2026. u.ae's salary figure sits on its general family page, not on its Green visa page. ADRO lists "sons up to age 25 and unmarried daughters, regardless of age" for Abu Dhabi only. Ask the issuing authority what it requires. General family rules are in the guide to family visa sponsorship eligibility.
A worked example: before you resign or restructure
Take an illustrative reader: a Dubai-based engineer on an employer-sponsored permit, with a bachelor's degree, considering Green residence.
Step 1: the category. The engineer still works for the employer, so the skilled worker category is the one to read. The conditions ask for a job at MOHRE level 1, 2 or 3, the degree, a monthly salary of at least AED 15,000 and a valid employment contract.
Step 2: the documents. GDRFA Dubai's residence card lists "A passport copy must be valid for at least 6 months.", "A permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation." and "An employment contract if the establishment is governmental, semi-governmental or from free zones." The engineer checks which applies.
Step 3: the questions the pages do not answer. We did not find, on the pages reviewed on 20 September 2026, a statement on who cancels a self-sponsored Green permit or what happens to it when the employment contract ends. The engineer asks GDRFA Dubai before changing jobs, and asks MOHRE how the existing work permit is handled.
Step 4: the grace period. The engineer notes both ICP sentences, 180 days for Green holders and 90 days for skilled workers in levels 1 to 3, and asks which applies.
If the engineer later leaves employment to freelance, the freelancer conditions, including the MOHRE permit and income test, are the ones to read. Ask the authority whether a new application is needed before acting.
For long-term residence with different thresholds, see the golden visa guide.
Who decides, what you prepare, what a provider can do
What the authority decides. Article 42 of the resolution states that "The ICA may grant the Foreigner a Working Residence Permit without a The Guarantor/The Employer" for skilled workers, and Article 44 opens with the same words, "The ICA may grant", for self-employment. In Dubai, GDRFA Dubai publishes its own green services. The issuing authority, not any provider, decides each application, the grace period that applies and any renewal. MOHRE, which ICP names as the issuer of the freelance or self-employment permit, decides that permit.
What you prepare. Your passport with at least six months' validity, your MOHRE permit and the skill level MOHRE confirms, your degree or diploma, salary or income evidence for your category, the trade licence and partnership papers for investors, and a note of expiry dates. Keep the answers the authority gives you in writing.
What a provider can do. A provider can help gather and check documents against the published list, submit them through the channel the authority names and track progress, within whatever its licensed activity allows.
Eligibility is determined by the relevant UAE authority. This article describes published requirements and is not immigration advice.
Last verified: 20 September 2026. Information verified against official sources on 20 September 2026.
If you are weighing self-sponsored Green residence against staying on employer sponsorship, contact RINJAZ to confirm availability, scope and quotation. RINJAZ is a privately licensed UAE service provider. It is not a government entity and does not act for any authority.
A provider's role, within whatever its licensed activity covers, is to prepare documents, submit them through the correct channel and track progress. ICP or GDRFA Dubai decides each Green residence application, and no provider can promise the outcome.
